ARTIST STATEMENT
The paintings in this exhibition are all made from observation in and of my studio. In these paintings, I take various elements and rearrange them. Set-ups grow and then disperse, the elements are reused but take on different roles in different arrangements from piece to piece. The objects generally stay in one place but the view outside the window changes each day, and in most of them I paint myself painting. Things are both moving and still. Or they move very slowly, like a plant.
The idea of a greenhouse came to mind as an analogy for these paintings, and for the experience of being in the studio making them. A greenhouse is above all a place where things grow. It is closed, separate from the world around it, but lets copious light in. It’s both more connected and more separate from the outer world than a regular room. It can be uncomfortable to stand for too long in a greenhouse, but that heat and humidity is necessary to make things grow that wouldn’t necessarily do so outside.
