The Empty Circle returns to Photo London with a vibrant fusion of photography and painting.
The Empty Circle gallery is thrilled to announce its participation in the 9th edition of Photo London, showcasing an exquisite blend of classic photography and contemporary painting. The booth features the works of renowned photographers – Brassaï, Robert Frank, Leonard Sussman, and Adolfo Doring – alongside the vibrant, expressionistic paintings of Claudia Doring Baez.
Baez’s paintings are animated by a reverence for art history, rendered in a contemporary, expressionistic vocabulary. She engages in conversations with the work of some of the great artists from the past centuries — Baez selects, re-creates, and adopts details from images to create her own visual language. Baez’s approach is unique; she uses the art of celebrated photographers as a foundation to explore their perspectives, stepping into their shoes to learn about their subject matter. This exhibit is deeply personal however, as Baez has a direct relationship with two of the four photographers in the exhibit. This is especially true of her reinterpretations of works by her late brother, Adolfo Doring.
This year's showcase theme, "The Outsider's Eye," highlights how each featured artist – coming from places as diverse as Hungary, Switzerland, the United States, and Mexico – views and portrays unfamiliar environments. Whether it’s the bustling streets of New York or the remote expanses of the Arctic Circle, their works offer fresh perspectives born of their experiences as outsiders.

Claudia Doring Baez, having spent most of her artistic career in New York, resonates particularly with this theme. As a Mexican artist in the United States, her work explores similar narratives of observation and immersion, providing a poignant reflection on her own experiences alongside those of the photographers she admires.
The Empty Circle gallery invites all attendees of Photo London to visit booth A05 and experience the beautiful synergy of photography and painting, an exploration of vision through the eyes of the outsider.
